Section 04
Craft & Pattern
The same shapes travelling between materials. This section is arranged the way the workshops are — by motif rather than by material.
The motif key, extended
Learn six of them and most panels start to come apart into parts.
The base grid: two squares, one turned. Two squares, one turned. Set it repeating and it produces the star-and-cross field most tile panels are laid out on.
Three dots and two wavy bands. Borrowed, ancient, and everywhere once you see it.
A radial flower used as a centre — the point a panel is composed around.
The Ottoman signature. Stylised almost to a symbol, and rarely botanical.
Fan-shaped and layered; the tulip's usual companion in a border.
A split-leaf arabesque that carries the eye along a band rather than stopping it.
The other rooms
Five sections; the same country read five ways.
